History of Berwind Fire-Rescue-EMS

Posted: January 26th, 2005 :: Berwind Fire-Rescue-EMS Inc. Station 1 and 2

In the Early 50's and late 60's Berwind was Overrun with Coal Mines, without proper fire protection. "Hose Houses" were built in areas around all sections of Berwind. that allowed members of the community to try and put fires out. Before Station 1 opended its doors in the summer of 1986 the nearest dept. was 6 miles away from the community. In the Fall of 1985 a Fatal Residental fire claimed the lives of 2 teenage family members of the Myers Family. in the West Section of New Town Bottom In Berwind.
The Berwind Vol. Fire Dept. Station 1 opened its doors with Rick Hensley as the first Fire Cheif. The station operated one Pumper.
The years past and the Department Grew. Cheif Adams Steped in For Cheif Hensley. the dept. added a Tanker and a Rescue truck to the fleet.
In 1995 two dept. members became Certified as EMT-B's. James "JJ" Johnson, and Roger Beavers.
in the spring of 1996 the dept. opend the doors of station 2 located in Squire to allow space for more apparautus for quicker arrivals to calls in the squire area. in 1999 the dept. purchased 2 1997 chevy SUV's and converted them into a Command truck. and a New Rescue truck to replace the old Rescue 1.
in 2001 a new engine was bought to replace the old Engine 1 from station 1. The old engine had been in service a number years.
to this day the members of the dept. continue to better there selfs as firefighter, taking training calles.
4 memebers are awaiting the EMT-I calls to begin to futher there training to help serve the community. The members of the Dept. are always ready to lend a hand to there neichbors and fellow depts.
