History of Berwind Fire-Rescue-EMS
In the Early 50's and late 60's Berwind was Overrun with Coal Mines, without proper fire protection. "Hose Houses" were built in areas around all sections of Berwind. that allowed members of the community to try and put fires out. Before Station 1 opended its doors in the summer of 1986 the nearest dept. was 6 miles away from the community. In the Fall of 1985 a Fatal Residental fire claimed the lives of 2 teenage family members of the Myers Family. in the West Section of New Town Bottom In Berwind.
The Berwind Vol. Fire Dept. Station 1 opened its doors with Rick Hensley as the first Fire Cheif. The station operated one Pumper.
The years past and the Department Grew. Cheif Adams Steped in For Cheif Hensley. the dept. added a Tanker and a Rescue truck to the fleet.
