BOSTON -- The state awarded more than $11 million in grants to cities and towns Tuesday to help pay for new firefighting equipment and fire safety education programs.

A 32-member task force on fire and building safety formed in the wake of the 2003 Rhode Island nightclub fire to review state laws and regulations recommended more funding for those programs.

The state Executive Office of Public Safety is awarding the $10 million in equipment grants to fire departments of cities, towns, authorities and fire districts to purchase firefighting equipment or for up to 50 percent of personnel costs.

"Fire safety hinges upon our ability to both prevent and respond to emergencies," said Public Safety Secretary Edward Flynn. "These grants are investments in more informed citizens and better equipped fire departments."

The departments that applied are receiving grants based on a population formula.

The state will also spend $1.08 million on Student Awareness of Fire Education grants. SAFE uses trained firefighters to teach fire and safety education to school students.

SAFE funding was awarded to all qualified departments based on their previous SAFE program implementation.
