Fire department honors residents, staff as heroes
found this article on rgj.com | Posted: April 8th, 2008Montoya, 40, received the Citizen Service Medal from the Sparks Fire Department during the department's 13th annual Commendation Award Ceremony. It's the highest civilian award the fire department presents, and Montoya earned it when he rescued a neighbor from her smoke-filled apartment in June.
"This was a true life-and-death emergency for the victim," said Sparks Fire Capt. Tom Garrison, who commanded the truck that responded to the fire. "He risked his life to save her. This is the true definition of a hero."
