DOVER — A Kittery, Maine man died late Thursday night from injuries he sustained in violent two-vehicle crash on Dover Point Road Thursday night.

The collision occurred just before 8 p.m. and resulted in the closure of a portion of the road for the duration of the evening.

Police say Normand Bourque, 62, of Kittery, Maine, was driving his Buick Sentra south and crossed into the northbound lane of an East End Bagels box truck.

"Based on the roadway evidence, the car crossed over the double yellow line and hit the truck at an angle," said Lt. Carey Beaulieu.

The box truck driver, Francisco Deoliveira, 51, of Peabody, Mass., was taken by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with what Beaulieu described as "superficial injuries."

The weight of the box truck pushed in the entire front end of the Buick. By the time both vehicles came to rest, they were locked together head-on. Firefighters used extrication equipment to remove the roof of the Buick and push back its dashboard to remove Bourque from the vehicle.

Bourque was unconscious when he was placed into the ambulance, firefighters say. He died shortly after at the hospital.

Beaulieu said the Strafford County Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to investigate the crash, but noted it would be difficult to determine what happened.

He noted the roadway was clear of ice and said preliminary investigation indicated that there was no impairment on the part of the Deoliveira or any other evidence indicating the box truck driver had any fault in the accident.

Beaulieu added there were no witnesses to the crash, only people who came out after the fact and called rescuers to the scene.

The crash happened in front of 14 Dover Point Road, which is just south of Dover Auto World. The road was closed from Dover Auto Road to about 20 Dover Point Road. The road was reopened at 1 a.m. Friday morning.

An autopsy is being performed on Bourque Friday afternoon, which will help police determined if a medical issue contributed to the crash.
