My Name is Jack Conklin, currently Chief,I also joined the Decatur Fire Dept. in 1969 and have seen a great deal of changes in the fire service over the years. Types of construction and contents have changed so much. Strutures burn faster and hotter and the smoke has become more deadly. When I started I was given a rubber coat and gloves hip boots and plastic helmet. At my first fire they told me stick the hose in the window and if you get enought water in the right spot the fire will go out.
